The Emmett Till Scholar program was launched on January 9th, 2023. The program is designed to teach students how to engage and facilitate dialogues on race while thinking critically about their own racial socialization according to Harro’s Cycle of Socialization and recognizing how others come to understand their own race stories.
January 9th – 13th, 2023 the first cohort of Emmett Till Scholars learned about Emmett Till’s story and researched their own racial socialization in the classroom with Emmett Till and Mamie Till Mobley’s cousin, Amberly Carter.
About the Emmett Till Truth and Racial Reconciliation Tour
The Emmett Till Scholars toured 6 local landmark locations on Monday January 9th, 2023. The family of Emmett Till took students on a guided tour of local landmarks from Argo to Chicago and shared their truths about how his life and death impacted them personally and sparked our nation’s Civil Rights Movement.
The Emmett Till Truth and Racial Reconciliation Tour was an IMSA grant sponsored initiative through their Intersession program.
This took a lot of support from family and community members. Special thanks to cousin Rev. Wheeler Parker and his wife Dr. Marvel Parker (Emmett Till Memorial Center, Summit, Illinois), Alexa Edwards and Jon Leonard (Argo High School) and Ms. Shirley and Mr. Carter from the historic Burr Oaks Cemetery.
